MARSHFIELD’S QUALITY ROOFING REPAIRING WISCONSIN STATE CAPITOL ROOF

    Wisconsin state capital
Wisconsin’s State Capitol building is getting some TLC, with help from Marshfield company Quality Roofing. With previous experience on projects including Lambeau Field and the Kohl Center, Quality Roofing is no stranger to working on iconic Wisconsin locations.

“I’m looking forward to working here on the capitol. It’s a very high profile project,” said Kyle Parks, Lead Crane Operator. “We’re at the state capitol, it’s a staple piece of Wisconsin.”

Parks enjoys the challenge of high-risk projects, and with people continually visiting the capitol building, this project presents especially unique challenges.

“We’re always being watched right now, and because safety is our #1 thing, there’s a lot to consider here,” said Parks.

B&B Quality Building Restoration, based in Fitchburg, is subcontracting the masonry work, and began by re-caulking the masonry in need of maintenance and repair. Next, as the main contractor, Quality Roofing will have a team of 5-10 people working throughout the project on various repair and replacement needs.

“We’ll be working with White Bethel Vermont Granite, which is really unique,” said Parks. “It’s a pretty good size building, too, so that adds to the challenge.”

Parks is proud of Quality Roofing’s dedication to safety and high standards, and is excited to work on the Capitol.

“We work for a great company and we do great work,” said Parks. “It’s awesome when we get some of these higher class jobs. That’s what I really look forward to.”

  • QUALITY ROOFING HELPS BRING UWSP “GREEN ROOF” TO LIFE

Visitors to UW-Steven Points often marvel at the newest building’s eco-friendly Green Roof, which local contractor Quality Roofing helped bring to life – literally.

“We put the membrane down in 2016 – the roof membrane that’s beneath the vegetative growth, which serves as the main waterproofing,” explained Lucas Kramer, project manager and estimator. “We followed up over the next two years with finishing up the Green Roof. It was a long project with it being new construction and not wanting the construction to happen over the vegetation.”

Featuring a walk-out patio at the second-floor level, visitors can enjoy the planter boxes installed and designed on the roof.

“The patio is part of the chemistry and biology department, and students are able to plant crops in those boxes,” explained Kramer, adding that there were many architectural elements that went into the roof’s design.

“Since it was going to be a heavily-trafficked roof and there were certain features that were going to be within reaching distances, there was curbing, a pedestal paver system, aluminum planter boxes, and then media growth installed,” he said. “There are boulders up there and swales of dirt. It was a very intricate design and install.”

As a subcontractor on the project, Quality Roofing was substantially involved in the pre-planning process with the State of Wisconsin in order to get the unique system approved.

UWSP green roof project“We got the system approved and then from there we did a lot of preparation with the general contractor and the State of Wisconsin,” said Kramer. “Obviously when doing a media or vegetative roof like this, we have to make sure that we get these plants in when they are going to be able to thrive with the seasons.”

Quality Roofing was also very involved in the scheduling process, due to the unique nature of the construction. Having completed other smaller-scale solar panel roofs and LEED-certified projects, Kramer and his team were familiar with white membrane roofs and the specific waterproofing involved.

“It’s an engineered design, so it’s important to make sure the structure can withstand something like this,” said Kramer. “The projects are very complex, especially figuring out your image. There is a lot of dirt and concrete on top of a building and it needs to be able to drain properly and support the system structurally.”

QUALITY ROOFING HELPS WISCONSIN COMMUNITY GO GREEN WITH SOLAR ROOFING PANELS

Marshfield, WI (OnFocus) Local business Quality Roofing is helping one community in Wisconsin go green and save money, thanks to the installation of solar roofing panels.

Last year, Quality Roofing worked alongside SunVest Solar and KONTEXT Architects as they redeveloped Sun Prairie City Hall. As the general prime contractor, Quality’s job was to oversee the roofing portion of the project.

Lucas Kramer, project manager and estimator, and a team of 10-15 people from Quality Roofing worked on the project from start to finish.

“We’ve worked with other solar panel contractors but not as a prime contractor,” he said. “It was also our first time working with SunVest. We didn’t install the solar panels but we tied them into the roofing that we installed.”

Quality Roofing also was responsible for protecting the roof and creating a safe environment for workers.

“There was another part of this job that was kind of unique — the vegetative roof, or ‘green roof’ as it’s sometimes called,” added Kramer. “We installed the green roof system, which has a vegetative media installed. Around the same time, we were installing a similar vegetative roof in Stevens Point. Those were our first two projects of that kind and we look forward to doing more in the future.”

The roof systems were installed over the course of a couple summer months and the crew returned the following spring to install the vegetative media, which wasn’t yet mature enough to have survived the winter.

“Every job has its unique challenges. It’s always interesting,” said Kramer. “This project was right downtown, so access was a challenge sometimes and we had to work around the police department, which was connected to the building. The City was great to work with. They all were very accommodating.”

Quality Roofing is proud to help provide positive environmental benefits and significant cost-savings for the City of Sun Prairie.

“It’s great to be an integral part of unique projects such as the one in Sun Prairie,” said Pat Begotka, owner of Quality Roofing. “I’m really proud of the team’s efforts and to see our company succeed with challenging projects like this one.”

WPPI awarded a grant to the City of Sun Prairie to install 240 solar panels to help offset the City’s building operating costs. Since being installed in December 2018, the new system has so far generated enough power to offset more than 2,700 pounds of CO2 emissions — the equivalent of planting 67 trees.

quality roofing signEstimates reveal that the solar installation will generate between 88,000 and 96,000 kWhs per year, which is about one-sixth of the building’s annual average energy usage. In about ten years, the $143,000 investment (half of which was grant-funded) is expected to pay for itself in savings, with the solar panels having a lifespan of 25 years.

Quality Roofing has been a locally-owned business since 1943, and was recently awarded Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s Firm of the Year.
