Quality Roofing is proud to be part of a unique modular building project that starts right here in Wisconsin and will eventually serve a hospital facility in Alaska.
The project is currently taking place in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where modular building units are being constructed before being shipped to Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Quality Roofing’s role is to complete the roofing work on the modular units before they make the long journey north.
Led by Project Manager Armando Ponce, the Quality Roofing team is applying its commercial roofing experience to a project with some very specific demands. Because the buildings are headed to a remote Alaska location, the roofing system needs to be built for challenging weather conditions, including high winds and hail exposure.
For this project, Quality Roofing is installing a Johns Manville roofing system that carries a 120 mph wind speed warranty and a one-inch hail rating. Johns Manville was selected because of the unique requirements of the project, including the fact that the modular units will be transported after the roofing work is completed.
In total, the project includes nine modular units. Once the buildings arrive in Alaska, the general contractor will place the units together on-site. Quality Roofing will then travel to Alaska in September to complete the final tie-in work between the buildings.
That final phase will include tying the modular units together at the roofline, filling the gaps between the units, and installing roofing membrane over those connections to create one complete, weather-ready roofing system.
While Quality Roofing has completed many commercial roofing projects, modular construction adds a different layer of complexity. The team has gained valuable experience working with modular builders, including previous work on a modular project for Aspirus in Chippewa Falls. That successful project helped lead to this new opportunity.
“This is definitely a unique project for our team, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Project Manager Armando Ponce. “We’re roofing the units here in Wisconsin, then traveling to Alaska to complete the tie-ins once they’re set in place. It’s not something you get to do every day.”
Six Quality Roofing team members are involved in the Oshkosh portion of the project, bringing the same attention to detail and workmanship that customers have come to expect from the company.
